Cocktail of Happy Thoughts

1. I had a wonderful opportunity to meet Filipina blog friends, Jo and Liz for the second time last Saturday at Glorietta. It was very nice of Jo to spend time with me and Liz (despite her busy and hectic schedule) before heading back to Canada.

It's been a pleasure meeting both of you. I really enjoyed our lovely chat. Liz, thanks for sharing the nice window of opportunity in blogging. I'm excited to give it a try. Jo, thank you for the lovely dinner and delicious dessert at Friday's. I'm grateful for all the lovely gifts.

2. I received another Nice Matters Award. This time it's from Mike of Mike's Homefront. I'm touched that he has thought of me for this award even though we've only known each other just recently. Mike's thoughtful words about me ...
Rachel Heart of Rachel, as she is known around Blogdenville, is one of the sweetest people I have come across here. Her comments are very kind and very uplifting. I know she already has a Nice Matters Award but she is so nice she deserves another one.

Thank you Mike! I really appreciate your kind words.

Mike has a very interesting site with fun, entertaining and insightful weekly features. My favorite is Mikie's Friday Funbags where he features a portion of a photograph and lets his readers guess what it is. The first one who guesses it correctly wins a nice personalized badge.

3. I'm very happy for my best friend, Chary and Jules' cousin, Nina for passing the June 2007 nursing board exam. I know they invested a lot of time and effort in their studies and made a lot of sacrifices. I'm glad everything was worth it.

I know you have to study for another big exam. Good luck to both of you! I know you can do it.

4. My Auntie Josie is here for a vacation. It's been so many years since her last visit. I was in my early teens when she left for the States. It was wonderful to see her again. We spent an afternoon reminscing about the old days and catching up with recent events in our lives.

5. My friend, Cora, gave me freshly baked chocolate chip cookies (Vegan version). I was surprised to learn that she didn't use any eggs in her recipe. I love the chewy consistency of the cookies she made.

Dad Can Do Better

You know - fathers just have a way of putting everything together.
Erika Cosby (1965-) Daughter of Bill Cosby US actor / singer

Yohan loves his uncles' model robots so I decided to buy him one after class. Yohan wanted me to build it right away while waiting for the school van.

Mom, please put it together.
I don't know how. Let's ask Daddy to do it later.
Yohan: Just look at the instructions.

Yohan struggled a bit with the word instruction but as his mom, it was easy for me to understand him. I realized Yohan is maturing fast when he told me that I can do it as long as I follow the instructions. It made me smile.

Just like the famous line, "Saved by the bell" the school van came in the nick of time. Yohan didn't push it any longer.

When we got home, Yohan was very excited to show his Dad his new toy. It was a 1/144 scale model. It had a lot of pieces that need to be assembled. Jules started doing the model right away.

I made the boys some microwave popcorn. They both enjoyed eating the popcorn. Jules quietly assembled the model while Yohan would break the silence every 15 mintues or so to ask, "Is it finished?"

After 1 1/2 hours of putting together the pieces, the model was finally finished. Yohan was very happy. His Dad went to bed to take a nap, a little tired but he didn't complain. It was enough to see our boy happy.

There are just some things that a Dad can do better.

The Moon - A Lost Opportunity

As a child, I remember how fascinated I was watching a lunar eclipse for the first time. It was funny how my nanny told me of the story that the moon was being eaten by an invisible giant snake. Being so young, I thought it was true until I learned about eclipse in school.

I heard that there was going to be a total lunar eclipse tonight and it was going to be visible in the Philippines. I even took note of the time the eclipse was supposed to start (6:08 PM) and end (7:22 PM).

After eating an early dinner, I asked my husband to accompany me outside. The sky was covered with clouds and couldn't see the moon and the stars. We went to the village clubhouse (located at a high point) hoping to see a glimpse of the moon but there was none. The sky was heavily cloaked. I was a little disappointed.

According to the news, people from Luzon, Philippines failed to see the eclipse tonight because of cloudy skies brought about by the rain. Other areas in the country were lucky.

The next visible total lunar eclipse (with totality visible here locally is concerned) will be on June 15, 2011. Between this eclipse till the June 15, 2011 will be some partial and penumbral lunar eclipses only. source

Farewell Parties

We said farewell to Tito Ed and Tita Princess as they headed back to Chino. I hope they enjoyed their 6-week vacation visiting the many beautiful places in the Philippines. I'm sure nothing compares to being reunited with family and friends.

We hosted a small party for them at our house a few weeks ago. Jules prepared Green Salad, Spaghetti Bolognese, BBQ Ribs and Rosemary Chicken. For dessert, he made carrot cake and vanilla ice-cream with fruits. My MIL brought Shrimp Thermidor and others brought ice-cream.

Left: Jules making dessert.
: Tita Princess with her sisters Tita T, Tita B and my MIL.

Another farewell party for Tito Ed and Tita Princess was hosted by my MIL and BIL last Friday night at my in-law's house.

Yohan enjoyed his first Shabu Shabu. He was thrilled about the idea of cooking his food. He was more excited about the cooking part rather than eating probably because the food was new to him.

Goodbyes are not the end.
They simply mean I'll miss you
Until we meet again!"

Photo Hunt :: Happy

Come and join the hunt here.

One of the happiest moments in my life was when Yohan was born (July 18, 2003). Each day I thank God for such a wonderful gift.

I remember telling my son that he's the one who makes me happy. He has never forgotten the words and sometimes, when I feel a little sad, I would purposely say aloud, "I'm so sad." I like how my son would reply, "I love you mommy. I'm the one who makes you happy."

I never get tired of hearing him say this. It's remarkable how simple words, no matter how many times I've heard it before, can bring joy to my heart.

note: Photo taken when Yohan was 8 months old.

When something is broken, it can either be repaired or discarded permanently.
You inspect the object and assess the damage.
Then you determine whether it can still be saved.

Look at this badminton racket. A wrong swing has deformed it.
At first glance, you'll know, it cannot be fixed anymore.
Best thing to do? Replace it with a new one.

When trust is broken, it cannot easily be repaired.
Nor can it be thrown away and replaced with something new.
It takes time to build trust.
It is earned.

A broken one might take years to mend.
There's even a chance that you cannot get it back anymore.
Don't make that mistake.
Cherish and handle it with care.

Heads or Tails #1

Learn more about Heads Or Tails here.
View More Heads Or Tails Participants.

Skittles is hosting a new meme called Heads or Tails. This week's theme is Luck.

A stone accidentally hit our window when someone from the village maintainance team was cutting the grass outside.

Apparently, the blade of the grass cutter hit a stone which caused it to act like a projectile. The stone hit our window, penetrating the screen and landed on the floor of our living room.

We were lucky because nobody was in that area when it happened. You could see the rock on the picture (I put a dime beside it to give you an idea of its size). This kind of rock, which had a pointed side is big enough to cause injury especially at that kind of speed.

I feel lucky and blessed that no one in my family got hurt. When I saw the huge hole in our window screen, I was thankful that my son was upstairs when it happened.

I called the village engineer to report the incident. He immediately went to our house with the person responsible for the accident. I asked about the cost of repair. When I found out that the cost will be deducted from the man's salary, I decided not to pursue it. I just told them to be extra careful next time and to make precautionary measures to avoid a repeat incident.

I'm happy and thankful that God has spared the people in our house from getting hurt.

Patience, Hope, Faith

Life does not always guarantee you of a smooth ride. Sometimes you encounter a few puddles or rough spots that are hard to avoid. Small obstacles are easy to overcome. You can go through them with little hesitation.

What if it’s not a minor obstruction? What if it’s a huge boulder defying you from getting through? There is no other way to get to your destination but through it. If you turn back, chances are you can never come back. There is a need to go on this road because your future relies on it.

Sometimes, it’s easy to give up when you see the boulder blocking your way. The giant rock blocks the other side. You cannot even take a glimpse of what lies ahead.

I've been on this road. I was verwhelmed by this huge obstacle. It looked formidable and it stood firm on the ground as if nothing could ever make it move from its place. I pushed but it wouldn’t bulge an inch. I felt hopeless. I was about to turn around. Clueless where to go and too weak to continue but I heard footsteps coming.

I waited. A familiar face. I saw something in that person’s eyes. Hope.

Together we pushed. Nothing. Then we pushed again. Still nothing. It was a terrible feeling. Perhaps it was impossible. We looked at each other and agreed to give it another mighty push.

One, two, three … “Push!!!” We gave everything we got.

Like an answered prayer, it moved but just enough for us to see what lies ahead. It was a lovely sight. Beautiful horizon, colorful flowers and butterflies fluttering around. The sky was in technicolor... a rainbow!

We smiled at each other. We knew we just have to get there no matter what but we were so exhausted. We didn’t have energy left to push anymore.

What next? Perhaps, for now we can rest and admire the beauty just within our grasp.

We agreed to come back and wait until our energies return to normal. Patience. That’s all we need now. Perhaps, tomorrow, we can continue to push the boulder. Hope. If we work hand in hand, who knows, we can push it far enough for us to be able to go through that small space. Faith.

Patience. Faith. Hope.

Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

Little Pleasures

It isn't the great big pleasures
that count the most; it's
making a great deal out
of the little ones.

My son already knows how to write his name. His strokes are still wobbly but he's doing a great job practicing daily. The most challenging letter for him in his name is the small letter a but with more practice, he will get the hang of it.

Yohan was thrilled when they had a planting activity in school. After his class, I saw him walking very slowly carrying a plant. He gave it to me and said it was his gift for me. I was really very touched.

He enjoys watering the plant every morning. He said he wants to take good care of it to help it grow.

Meeting wonderful blog friends, Jo , Liz and their families at Patricia's (Jo's daughter) 7th Birthday Party at Jollibee Blue Wave. Looking forward to our coffee date next weekend.

Several days of relaxed blogging because Yohan didn't have classes (suspension of classes because of typhoon).

I miss my family. Not a single day passes that I don't miss them. I'm glad they called this morning. I'm happy that they are doing well.

I also talked to my best friend, Chary. It's a comfort knowing she's always there for me in good and bad times.

A nice, simple breakfast. I love hot pandesal, sunny side up egg and ham.

Taking a much needed rest during the long weekend.

Tagged :: Blast From the Past

Yvonne Russel of Grow Your Writing Business tagged me to do this meme. Thanks Yvonne, I enjoyed doing this because it gave me a chance to reflect on my older posts.

Let me take you with me as I reminisce about a few memorable blog entries.

My Own Blast From the Past (arranged according to date)

1. An Ode to Miko. It's not easy for me to blog about sad events. When my furry friend passed away on July 10, 2006, I felt a need to release the pain and blogging about it helped me a lot.

2. 1st Monday Madness. I joined and posted my first meme on Sept. 11, 2006. I enjoyed visiting other meme participants and gained new blog friends.

3. My Pretty Lil' House in Gerbera Street. Toni of Wifely Steps is one of my great inspirations in blogging. She loves sharing many unique and interesting links on her site. Toni invited me to be her neighbor on Gerbera Street and I immediately loved the place. I built my house there on Nov. 29, 2006. You are welcome to drop by anytime.

4. My KMMS Package. I joined Kooky Kay's (of Simple Pleasures) swap project called KMMS. My partner for the January KMMS was Graymama of The Beauty of Gray. I posted about Graymama's lovely package on Feb. 28, 2007.

5. Yohanism #1. On March 13, 2007 I started sharing memorable conversations of my son. It went through a series of names until a good blog friend, Dine (a.k.a. Sexy Mom) of The D Spot suggested Yohanism. It was perfect and I made a permanent banner using her suggestion. Yohanism became one of my regular blog 'segments'.

6. Labor of Love. I was very touched when my husband and son worked together to bake me cupcakes on the eve of my birthday. They presented me with lovely carrot cupcakes at exactly 12:00 a.m. of March 29, 2007. Priceless!

7. Do You Remember the First Time We Met? I put this sticky post on my blog last April 3, 2007. It was wonderful to reflect on how I first met bloggers online. Did you participate in this one? If not, I'd love to hear from you. Please click the link and leave a comment.

8. Early Blessing of the Week from Dawn. I received my first blog recognition from Dawn of Thoughts From Along the Broken Road on April 17, 2007. I was so touched when she nominated me for the Thinking Blogger Award.

9. Thank You Leah. I won! I could hardly believe it when I found out that I was the lucky winner of Leah's (of Mga Muni-Muni) 100th Post Contest. It was the first time I won something online. I shared the marvelous gift I received from Leah on May 16, 2007. It was a lucky start because I won another prize after that.

10. Recipe for New Friendship (Pinoy Moms Network). On May 26, 2007, I had an opportunity to meet some wonderful bloggers in person. Friendships bloomed and it opened the doors to PMN E-zine.

Blast From the Past Rules

Please try to limit your list to 10 posts or less. Take your time. Do some digging in your archives to find the perfect ones - it’s to your advantage more than anything else. Please link to where this meme first started. Also link to this post - at the blog where you were tagged. Tag 5 folks. Let them know by email, contact form or some other efficient method.

Rain and a Sad Love Song

The sky was covered in dark, gray clouds on our way home from school yesterday. As I put on my earphones to listen to my mp3s, my son asked if he could listen with me. I gave him one of the earphones. The song playing at that time was Someday by Nina (Filipina artist). I love this song and it's on top of my mp3 list.

I was surprised when Yohan remarked, "Mommy, this is a very sad song."

Upon hearing this, Jules and I exchanged looks. My husband asked what song we were listening to and when I told him, I saw a look of amazement in his eyes too.

It seems our four year old son can already categorize songs into happy and sad.

You may listen to the song by clicking play below:

Behind Precious Thoughts

Thank you Jo of My Precious Thoughts for inviting us to celebrate Patricia's 7th Birthday. It was a pleasure meeting you and your lovely family last Sunday. I wish we had more time to get to know each other but I'm so glad we had a chance to meet in person.

I know you were very busy entertaining your guests but you made sure that me and my family were well taken cared of. We really appreciate the warmth you showed us.

Thanks Jo for the nice presents and goodies you gave Yohan. He had a nice time even though he was too shy to join the games.

It was also a pleasure meeting Liz (MommyBa) and her husband. I hope their son will get well soon. He wasn't feeling well so he wasn't able to come with them to the party.

Jo, enjoy the rest of your vacation in the Philippines. Take care!

Photo Hunt :: Row (something in a “row”)

Come and join the hunt here.

A few months ago my son was able to complete the Shrek toys from Happy Meal. Here are the characters of Shrek 3 in a row: Donkey, Shrek, Ogre Baby, Fiona, Pinocchio, Dronkey, Ginger Bread Man and Puss in Boots.

I gave these seven Archangels (below) as a gift to my dearest and loyal yaya (nanny) a year ago to protect, guide and keep her safe.

The Archangels are messengers from the Divine to mankind. They offer spiritual sustenance and inspiration. They are protectors of humankind and have specific functions which aid the collective and universal spirit of the human race. ~~ lifted from the book The Angel Oracle by Ambika Walters

Here are the archangels in a row. The seven archangels namely are (not arranged accordingly in the picture): Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Barachiel, Judiel and Seatiel.

Two Hearts Wrapped Together

A hug is two hearts wrapped in arms. ~Author Unknown

Never wait until tomorrow to hug someone you could hug today, because when you give one, you get one right back your way.~Author Unknown

I jump start my mornings by hugging my son tight.
Every chance I get I hold him close and let him know how much I love him.
He enthusiastically returns my embraces every time.
At night, I hug him until we fall asleep.
Like holding a security blanket, I feel happy and secure knowing I'll wake up to the same joyful routine.

Wednesday Heavy Downpour

The rain was pouring hard this morning. I woke up at 4 am as usual. After taking a bath and getting dressed, I looked at my sleeping son and hesitated to wake him up. I listened to the radio for a while hoping classes was suspended but there was no announcement from The Dept. of Education so I woke up Yohan for his morning routine.

We didn't ride with the school service today. Jules drove us to school because he had badminton training near Yohan's school. We were on the road when I heard the suspension of classes in NCR. We're not part of NCR so Yohan had regular classes despite the heavy downpour. If he didn't have a scheduled exam, I would have let him skip class today.

I feel sorry for all the students who had to go to school despite the terrible weather for nothing. The annoucement from Dep Ed came too late. Students were already on their way to school. They should have announced it several hours earlier. As usual people pointed fingers. Dep Ed said it was the responsibility of the mayors to make the annoucement in their respective areas. Late announcements such as this one have always been a problem. When I was young, I experienced countless times that I went to school only to find out classes were suspended. Announcements were always late. Apparently, the system hasn't changed over the years.

After long hours of continuous rain, many areas in Manila are flooded. Good thing, Dep Ed learned from today's mistake and announced earlier this evening that classes are suspended tom in NCR.

I know many moms who will have a lot of free time to go bloghopping tom. :) As for me, I need to go to bed in a few minutes because Yohan has regular classes tom.

Before I go to sleep, let me share this lovely message I received from my friend today:

On a hot day in a village, all the people decided to pray for rain to come. Everybody came to church but only one boy brought an umbrella. That is what you call FAITH. All things are possible in HIS time.

Keep the faith! May you have a blessed day ahead.
