UTI in Adults
A few months ago my friend complained about pain on the right side of her back under the ribs. She also felt the need to urinate often, however, the amount of urine was always little. There was a discomfort every time she urinated. Her stomach also felt unusually heavy.
She suspected that she had UTI but she did not seek medical attention immediately. My friend tried water therapy. She also drank a lot of buko juice (young coconut juice). The pain and the heaviness in her belly did not disappear. It was only when she experienced fever and chills that she decided to go to the doctor.
My friend was asked to have a urinalysis. The lab results confirmed that she had UTI. She was given antibiotics to fight the infection.
Infections of the urinary tract are the second most common type of infection in the body. You can avoid getting UTI by drinking lots of water everyday and frequent use of the bathroom. If you feel like urinating, do not hold it.
UTI in Children
I was surprised when I found out that my son's schoolmate also has UTI. I did not realize that even kids are prone to this kind of infection. The mom said it all started out as fever. When the fever did not break after three days, she decided to bring her daughter to the pediatrician. Lab tests were requested by the doctor including urinalysis. Results confirmed that the young girl has UTI. She was advised to take antibiotics and refrain from eating salty foods particularly junk foods. Good hygiene is also an important factor.
